Bodhisattvas keep their minds wide open. As they walk the path toward enlightenment for the benefit of others, this openness allows them to use all experiences and circumstances to develop more compassion and wisdom. As modern bodhisattvas, we can remain engaged, yet stay open; we can take up a cause, yet stay open; and we can have compassion for both sides of a conflict by staying open. The bodhisattva path can be a powerful, personal way to meet and transform difficulties by embodying the spirit of altruism wherever we go.
Dungse Jampal Namgyel, Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche's son and Dharma Heir, sees Buddhism as a practical set of skills that contribute greatly to our ability to live a full and compassionate life. His humor, insight, and experience as a modern Western person allow him to pinpoint the relevance of the Buddhist teachings to the range of life's experiences.
